The Great Paul Newman: 1925 -2008
Hollywood Happenings
“There is a point where feelings go beyond words.
I have lost a real friend.
My life -- and this country -- is better for his being in it.”
~ Robert Redford
“An era just ended. Paul Newman was a great humble giant. He said it was all down to luck, but the rest of us know it was his talent, wit and generous heart that made him the star he was.
He used his success to help others and did it without wanting
a lot of credit. He should be an example to everyone in the
acting profession because he seemed to have had his ego surgically removed.
A man who was easy going, who didn't like to be fussed over and truly deserved the admiration and affection he had from millions all over the world.”
~ Kevin Spacey
“He set the bar too high for the rest of us.
Not just actors, but all of us. He will be greatly missed.”
~ George Clooney
“Paul was a very fine actor and a really good race driver. But mostly, he personified humanity -- always taking care of those who were less fortunate. For me, this will be his legacy.”
~ David Letterman
“Paul was an American icon, philanthropist and champion for children. We will miss our dear friend, whose continued support always meant the world to us. Our prayers and thoughts are with Joanne and the Newman family and the many people who Paul impacted through his endless kindness and generosity.”
~ Bill and Hillary Clinton
“I was blessed to have known him. The world is better because of him. Sometimes God makes perfect people and Paul Newman was one of them.”
~ Sally Field
“Paul Newman was the ultimate cool guy who men wanted to be like and women adored. He was an American icon, a brilliant actor, a Renaissance man and a generous but modest philanthropist.
He entertained millions in some of Hollywood's most memorable roles ever, and he brightened the lives of many more, especially seriously ill children, through his charitable works.”
~ Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
“He was my hero.”
~ Julia Roberts

Dear Ben & Jerry
World Spotlight
Oh how we wish this turned out to be a joke. It didn't.
Peta is suggesting that Ben & Jerry's use HUMAN BREAST MILK in their ice cream rather than cow's milk. Somehow, in the search for ethical treatment of animals, they found it much more acceptable to herd lactating women, hook them up to a corporate breast pump, and have them produce enough breast milk to meet the staggering product demand that's required to keep up with Ben & Jerry's $300 million in annual ice cream sales.
You can read the letter sent to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, on behalf of Peta, and decide for yourselves how you feel about the subject.
Personally, we now have an appetite for absolutely nothing. And we had just found Ben & Jerry's Organic Chocolate Fudge Brownie too!

Kelly Preston: On Location
Only In The Hamptons
Photo: Lisa Wagner/BlogHamptons/SplashNews.com
Now that tourists have been replaced by film crews in the Hamptons, we thought we'd pay a visit to the set of "Suburban Shootout," staring Judy Greer and Kelly Preston, a.k.a. Mrs. Travolta, to see what the buzz, or should we say boom, is about. (Yesterday their crew "blew up" a building on Main St. in Bridgehampton with the help of a little sugar glass and compressed air.)
Described by producers as a dark, half-hour comedy about a woman caught between two rival gangs of homicidal housewives, Suburban Shootout is being filmed as a pilot for HBO. Director and East Hampton resident, Barry Sonnenfeld, had the cast and crew on the beach off Napeaque Bay in the Hamlet of Springs where we got to see the shows lead, Judy Greer, film a few takes of a fun make-out scene. Greer most recently starred in the now defunct “Miss Guided” on ABC.
Kelly Preston, who was shooting a bike riding scene later in the evening, look adorable in her character's red hair and bangs, and was nothing but smiles when we met up with her in-between make-up and wardrobe. Preston's character, Camilla Diamond, who is the leader of one of the hot-tempered "gangs," has given the actress a gritty but fun role to sink her teeth into. Though we learned she probably won't use her own teeth when she bites down...Preston has a stunt double on set to step in for the petite Mom for everything from building explosions to bike riding without a helmet. Hey, a Mom's gotta stay safe!
Suburban Shootout will continue filming around the Hamptons through September 26th.

Long Island Loses "Monster Man"
Only In The Hamptons
No, not the Montauk Monster... The Monster Man from Montauk; The legendary Frank Mundus, who died at the age of 82 Wednesday. Long hailed by those in the know
as the inspiration behind Quint, the grizzly, straight-shooting Captain of the Orca from Steven Spielberg's JAWS, Frank Mundus was a local legend.
Born a Jersey boy, Mundus moved to Montauk in 1951 to become a fisherman. After launching a charter boat business that took brave souls shark hunting out on the Atlantic, he became a celebrity. It was Mundus who harpooned the biggest great white ever caught - a 4,500 pound monster that he brought in off Amagansett in 1964. And he regained national notoriety in 1986 when he and fishing partner Donnie Braddick caught a 3,427-pound great white off Montauk. That victory catch is still noted as the largest shark to ever be caught by rod and reel.
After a recent fishing trip in Montauk, where his beloved Cricket II still runs charters, Mundus returned to his second home in Hawaii with his wife Jenny. It was there that Mundus suffered a heart attack as he was exiting a plane on September 5th. He spent the next five days hospitalized before he died from complications on September 10th.
Mundus is survived by his wife, Jeanette Mundus and daughters Patricia Mundus, Barbara Crowley, and Theresa Greene.
Montauk will never be quite the same.

Live From New York, It's Saturday Night
It Happened In The City...or is it?
It's moments like last night's opening sketch, featuring Tina Fey as Sarah Palin and Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton, that make Saturday Night Live the institution that it is. But what about the other 84 minutes of the show? Was it the SNL we've come to know and love? Was it chock-full of intelligent, biting comedy that pulls from the headlines and today's popular culture? Unfortunately, not that we saw.
In lieu of a lesbian Lohan and gal pal Ronson sketch, we got Andy Samberg digging Cathy out the comic strips. "Ack!" indeed. Rather than witty, political satire that involved lipstick and pigs, we got "awkward ugly kids." And instead of running with Whoopi Goldberg asking John McCain if she should be worried about becoming a slave again, we got a dancing swim coach in a sketch that wasted the presence of the Olympic swimmer they had on hand.
With the exception of Weekend Update (minus Cathy), which often proves itself to be the saving grace of many lackluster episodes, and a great T-Mobile skit, most of the 84 minutes that followed the brilliance of the opening sketch simply fell flat.
We're hoping that Lorne and the gang get their Mojo back and find their groove before we return to the days when we'd nod off right after the monologue.
Until then, at least we'll always have Palin and Clinton...

Barack Obama Cancels SNL Appearance
World Spotlight
Photo: BarackObama.com
Due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Ike, Barack Obama has canceled his highly-anticipated appearance on tonight's season premiere of Saturday Night Live.
Obama spokesperson Jen Psaki announced, in a statement given late last night, "In light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Senator Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on Saturday Night Live tomorrow evening."
The Obama campaign have also changed the entry page of their web site, barackobama.com, to a donation screen, urging their supporters to help the victims of Hurricane Ike and offering donation links to both the American Red Cross and Save the Children.
As of this morning, thousands of homes and government buildings in Texas have been flooded, many roads are completely washed out, 2.9 million people are without power and several fires burned unabated through the night as crews could not reach them.
